Through the class ATCM 4341: Applied Experience Design, we partnered with Health Bank One, a company dedicated to giving you full control over your health records and giving you the resources you need to understand your health. We were presented with the challenge of making their app usable on a daily to weekly basis by redesigning and creating features. I worked on a team of five: Amber Brunner (Project Manager), Jimena Murray (Lead Researcher), Kaelon Christle (Secondary Researcher), and Vy Nyguen (Lead Developer). I served as our group's lead designer, while we all had project roles, we all contributed and worked on every part of the pipeline for our final product. Our positions allowed us to be able to take charge of an area of the pipeline while still working diligently in all other areas to create an end product we would all be proud of.
We conducted three key areas of research to guide the design and development of our app: surveys, secondary research, and interviews.
Starting with the survey, our lead researcher designed a 50-question questionnaire completed by 97 women aged 40–60. The survey covered various topics—from general background information to specific questions about participants' health challenges and experiences with the healthcare system.
Some notable findings include:
After analyzing the survey results, our secondary researcher led a competitive analysis and gathered relevant articles and existing studies to deepen our understanding of the demographics and needs of midlife women. This research revealed several key insights:
To complete our research, we conducted one-on-one interviews with women within our target demographic to gather personal stories and first-hand perspectives on health and technology. Each team member interviewed one participant, resulting in five in-depth interviews. These conversations revealed recurring themes around usability, integration, and support in digital health tools.
Key Quotes:
When women in their 40s to 60s need an intuitive solution for comprehensive health management they want an app that tracks key health metrics, connects to medical portals, provides reminders, guides them through procedures, and stores family medical history.
Health Bank One’s original logo incorporated a medical plus sign but felt overly complex. We chose to simplify it, retaining the plus sign while integrating a fingerprint motif within it. Just as every fingerprint is unique, so is each person’s medical and family history, making this symbolism a meaningful and fitting choice
One of Health Bank One’s standout features is its interactive CareBot AI, which lets users ask questions about their health or medical records and receive tailored recommendations. We aimed to give this experience a more fun and personable feel, leading to the creation of a more approachable, character-driven design.
Health Bank One initially used shades of blue, but they were applied sparingly throughout the app. As we aimed to create a more vibrant, user-friendly experience with a greater use of color, we decided to brighten the palette and shift toward a more teal-toned blue.
The existing font used by Health Bank One was nice. Still, during the rebranding and feature development process, we found that Montserrat aligned more closely with the direction of our updated design.

Collaborating with Health Bank One as the lead designer was a deeply rewarding experience that pushed me to grow both creatively and professionally. This project taught me the value of collaborative leadership—recognizing that while one person can’t do everything, a strong leader can guide a team toward a shared vision.
Our team worked closely at every stage to create an app that not only meets real needs but also reflects the voices of the women we designed it for. I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished together.
One of the most important lessons I took away is that design is never static. It evolves quickly. What matters is staying adaptable, open to feedback, and focused on creating meaningful solutions. This mindset allowed us to navigate change with confidence and ultimately deliver a product we believe in.
